How to be like Wonder Woman
Posted on 20 June 2017
It’s no secret that there has been a new wave of feminism in the past years. You would remember the recent catwalks and slogan tees “The Future is Female” and “Support Your Local Girl Gang” (that one I particularly like).
The contradiction in this new wave is rampant however, because you cannot be a feminist whilst also exploiting the cheap labour of female factory workers.
Beyond the western’s world pursuit for sex equality, there is a manufacturing industry where female garment workers are 80% of the workforce. Whilst ignorance might suggest this is a positive percentage for women, the truth is that these women have little power to say no to the only job they can find. Women everywhere in the world have less access to education than men, thus they have fewer employment opportunities and are easily manipulated into risky work.

So how can you be more like Wonder Woman? How can you empower women?
Whilst fashion may at first seem like a pursuit purely for aesthetics, the clothes that we wear on our bodies have an impact way beyond what we may realise. When you are choosing to buy clothes, you can choose to support the women in garment factories. At Toby Heart Ginger we know where our garments are made, we know who makes our clothes, and we can proudly support a fashion industry that holds human values and women in high esteem.
