Amber Valletta & Karen Elson, 2017 CFDA Fashion Awards
CFDA stands for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, during this evening of events the world is treated to the celebration of significant and influential designers who have shaped the recent past of fashion design and its industry. The Star-studded evening was on the 4th of June, featuring the attendance of Heidi Klum, Janelle Monae, Nicole Kidman, the Hadid sisters, Karlie Kloss, Anna Wintour and Diane Von Furstenburg to name an influential few. The awards which designers receive are an achievement of global recognition within the American Fashion Council which consist of individuals such as Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.
The awards given out during the event were accepted by Raf Simons, creative director of Calvin Klein who won the Men’s and Women’s designer of the year awards. Franca Sozzani for the Fashion Icon Award, Stuart Vevers for the Accessories Designer Award, Pat McGrath for the Founder’s Award and Demna Gvasalia for the International Award plus many more.
Simons’s big win is only the second time in the history of the CFDA Awards that the same designer has won both the menswear and womenswear prizes in the same year. The other designer to do it? None other than Calvin Klein himself, who took home both statues in 1993.
Unlike events such as the Met Gala or the Red Carpet, the CFDA awards are an opportunity for influential individuals to bring attention to important political, social and economic issues as Fashion is a direct representation of society at any present time.
